The Difference Between an External and Internal Goal
An external goal is dictated by what you think you 'should' do. 'I should weigh X pounds', 'I should earn X dollars', 'I should find a stable man before I'm 30'. These goals can create temporary motivation, but they often end up generating shame when you don't achieve them.
An internal goal, on the other hand, arises from an authentic desire: 'I want to feel more alive in my body', 'I want to create something that reflects me', 'I want to live a relationship that nourishes me'. The difference may seem subtle, but it changes everything in the long run.
"A goal that reflects you pulls you forward. A goal that doesn't reflect you pulls you down."
Finding Your True Desires
To find your true desires, start by making silence. Away from social media, comparisons, and expectations. Ask yourself this question: if no one could judge you and failure was impossible, what would you do?
Another powerful technique: look at what makes you jealous. Jealousy, when decoded, is often a compass towards what you deeply desire. If you envy a friend's freedom who travels alone, perhaps your true desire is to belong to yourself more.
